Ukrainian Vertep

In Ukraine, Vertep is a puppet theatre depiction of the Christmas story with some contemporary twists. The Tradition began in the 16th century, with many iterations existing. The practice of Vertep, became banned in 1917 by the Soviet Union.

The tradition essentially died out for a century, with its reemergence being seen in recent years as the interest in Ukrainian traditions has increase.

The Mummers Festival has been fortunate to have an opportunity to work closely with the Kubasonics, Puppeteer Baptiste Neis, the Ukrainian National Federation, and many volunteers to produce an all original, Ukrainian Vertep! Written by Ruth Lawrence.

To cap off the night, we  willl feature a special presentation to demonstrate the similar traditions of Malanka and Mummering. Malanka is a tradition that takes place around the New year.

Malanka and Mummers both involve disguises, and door to door visiting. This performance exhibits some of the colourful costumes of both traditions. Get ready to feast your eyes!
