The Ukrainian Vertep and Holiday show at The Rooms!
Ukrainian Vertep
In Ukraine, Vertep is a puppet theatre depiction of the Christmas story with some contemporary twists. The Tradition began in the 16th century, with many iterations existing. The practice of Vertep, became banned in 1917 by the Soviet Union.

The tradition essentially died out for a century, with its reemergence being seen in recent years as the interest in Ukrainian traditions has increase.

The Mummers Festival has been fortunate to have an opportunity to work closely with the Kubasonics, Puppeteer Baptiste Neis, the Ukrainian National Federation, and many volunteers to produce an all original, Ukrainian Vertep! Written by Ruth Lawrence.
