This year, we have a very special presentation for the coffee and culture series at The Rooms. As part of our collaboration with the Ukrainian community and this year's project to educate people on the traditions of both Newfoundland and Ukraine, Folklorists Brian Cherwick of the Kubasonics and Dale Jarvis will discuss Ukrainian and Newfoundland winter traditions.

 

They will look at similarities between Mummering and the Ukrainian customs of Vertep and Malanka. They will also discuss how these practices have evolved over time, especially when ancient rituals were transplanted to North America.
